Welcome to the home of the newly formed Surrey Transgender Support Group
Surrey Transgender Support (STS) is a brand new self-guided, inclusive self-help and support group for transgender people and their families in Surrey and the surrounding areas. We are a safe space (both emotionally and venue-wise) for all individuals - young, old and everyone in between - at all stages of the transgender journey. We acknowledge that things have improved for the trans community in terms of support and acceptance; however, there is still more to do. Our group will be there for the current generation and future generations, as we evolve as individuals and as a group.
“I am a trans-female. I have a gender dysphoria diagnosis and suffered throughout my life with massive anxiety caused by my dysphoria. My earliest memories of being at odds with my body are around age four. I self-harmed as a young child and more as a teenager, which I now know is fairly typical behaviour of gender dysphoria. There was little to no help for people like me back then in the sixties. The catalyst for founding this self-help group was the recent television drama Butterflies. Although it brought back many painful memories for me, the drama made me realise the benefits of a local self-help group. The Therapy Gardens is the perfect place, offering privacy, peace and a place to breathe.”
We are newly formed and will be self-led. It’s important to note we are not counsellors. There are no referrals needed, and there will be no sign-in. Surrey transgender Support is an informal group. We hope that people will find the group to be a safe space. The group is an accepting and welcoming peer-to-peer support group. We hope that people will feel comfortable being open and honest; however, there is no pressure to speak, open up, or engage.
Initially, there will be no formal agenda or structure to start. In due course, we aim to set up a working group of volunteers to take the lead and develop the event, structure, purpose, and activities for the future.
